9 Longest Serving Legislators of Nigeria's National Assembly
The 4th Assembly (1999-2003 - as it was known then) was well known in Nigeria's legislative history as the set of Legislators that had the highest changes in its Senate leadership within that period.
As at June 10th 2020, the 9th Assembly (which was inaugurated on June 11th 2019) has completed it's first legislative year, making the business of legislation in the new dispensation an uninterrupted affair for a period of 21 years!
During this period, a lot of Legislators have come and gone; while others have remained steadfast and committed to the mandate given to them by their constituents.
Here, we bring to you a list of 9 legislators who have continued to enjoy the support of their constituency by consistently being elected to represent them at the National Assembly, Abuja.
Number 1 - Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan (YOBE STATE)
21 Years - House of Representatives and Senate
Senator Ahmad Lawan who is the current Senate President of the 9th Assembly (2019-2023) was first elected on the platform of the All Progressives Party (APP) in 1999 to represent the people of Bade/Jakusko Federal Constituency of Yobe State. He served 2 terms in the House of Representatives ending in 2007.
In 2007, Senator Lawan contested and won the election as a Senator under the platform of the then All Nigerian People's Party (ANPP), which had transformed from the APP. He began representing Yobe North Senatorial district with that victory. He had also been re-elected into the Senate in 2011, 2015 and 2019.
Senator Ahmad Lawan has served 2 House of Representatives terms, 3 Senatorial terms and is in his 4th term as a Senator, of which he has completed a full legislative year as at June 2020.
He is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)
Number 2 - Honourable Nicholas Ebomo Mutu OFR (DELTA STATE)
21 Years - House of Representatives
Hon. Mutu has being consistently given the mandate of his people of Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency of Delta State at the House of Representatives ever since he won the first battle in 1999.
He has been a member of the Green Chambers from the 4th to the current 9th Assembly, spanning a period of 21 years and still counting.
He is a soft spoken legislator whom his critics have accused of having no tangible records to show for his long stay at the National Assembly and whose legislative work is below expectation.
Hon. Nicholas Ebomo Mutu have completed 5 consecutive terms of 4 years each (20 years) and is in his 6th term, which has already seen 1 year of legislative representation.
He is a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP)
Number 3 - Senator David Alechenu Bonaventure Mark (BENUE STATE)
20 Years - Senate
Senator David Mark held sway at the National Assembly between 2007 and 2015 when he was the Senate President.
He was first elected in 1999 to represent Benue North Constituency under the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). From 1984 to 1986, Senator Mark was the Military Governor of Niger State and was also a Minister of Communication at some point.
Mark is a trained Military Communications expert from the Nigerian Military Academy.
Senator David Alechenu Mark has concluded 5 consecutive terms representing the Benue North Constituency in the Red Chambers leaving with a history and a record of the longest serving Senate President in the history of the National Assembly.
Number 4 - Senator Ike Ekweremadu (ENUGU STATE)
17 Years+ Counting in the Senate
Senator Ike Ekweremadu was first elected to represent the Enugu West Senatorial district at the National Assembly in 2003.
His first real political move was when he was elected the Chairman of Aninri Local Government Area in 1997. A position that gave him the award of the Best Local Government Chairman for exemplary service to the people. Thereafter, he was appointed the Chief of Staff to the Enugu State Government House before being appointed as the Secretary to the Enugu State Government in 2002.
Senator Ekweremadu was elected to the position of the Deputy Senate President in 2007. A post he eventually retained when he was re-elected into the Senate in 2015.
He was elected the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament and eventually emerged the Speaker of the Regional Parliament in August 2011.
The Senator has served 4 consecutive terms as a Senator under the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is in his 5th and final term, having declared that he will not contest for any elective positions in the 2023 General Elections.
Number 5 - Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda (FCT)
17 Years+ Counting in the Senate
Senator Philip Aduda's foray into politics began in 1996 when he ran as an independent candidate to clinch the Councillorship seat of Karu Ward in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
In 2003, he was elected to serve the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency of the FCT, Abuja. He went on to be re-elected for a second term in 2007.
During the 2011 electioneering period, Senator Aduda was elected as the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja at the National Assembly. He is popularly referred to as 'The Landlord' of the Assembly Complex because of his representation of the seat of power, The FCT, Abuja at the National Assembly.
Senator Philip's father is the well respected Anglican Bishop of Gwagwalada - Rt. Rev. Tanimu Samara Aduda. He was also the Senate Minority Whip during the 8th Assembly between 2015 and 2019.
Aduda has completed 2 House of Representatives terms, 2 Senatorial terms and is in his 3rd Senatorial term at the National Assembly.
Number 6 - James Manager (DELTA STATE)
17 Years+ 1 Term House of Representatives and 4th Term Counting in the Senate
Senator James Manager who was the Chairman of the Delta State Chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) between 1998 and 1999, holds a Master's degree in Law.
He was first elected as a Senator representing the Delta South Senatorial district of Delta State in 2003.
He has served in many committees in the Red Chambers including the Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. He has consistently being re-elected to represent the Delta South Constituency in the 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 General Elections.
Senator James Manager has completed 4 Senatorial terms at the National Assembly and is in his 5th term.
He is a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP)
Number 7 - Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (BORNO STATE)
17 Years+ Two time House of Representatives and 3rd Counting in the Senate
Senator Ali Ndume was first elected on the platform of the All Nigerian People's Party (ANPP) in 2003 to represent Chibok/Damboa/Gwoza Federal Constituency of Borno State in the House of Representatives. He occupied this position for two consecutive terms - The 5th (2003-2007) and the 6th (2007-2011) Assemblies.
During the run-up to the 2011 General Elections, Senator Ndume decamped to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) from his ANPP in December 2010, less than 4 months to the election. He contested the Borno South Senatorial district election under the new platform and defeated his closest rival, Dr. Asaba Vilita Bashir with more than 12,000 votes.
As the horse-trading for the 2015 General Elections was to begin, Senator Ali led a group of about 20 Senators and some Governors to form the nPDP - a splinter group of the PDP which later coalesced with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to build a formidable ruling party.
He was elected under his new Party, the APC, as a Senator representing Borno South Constituency. He became the Senate Leader shortly afterwards but this was short-lived because in 2017, he was replaced by Senator Ahmad Lawan. In 2019, Ndume contested the leadership of the Senate as the President with Senator Ahmad Lawan but lost to his rival who garnered 78 votes out of the 107 votes cast to defeat him.

Number 8 - Honourable Olufemi Hakeem Gbajabiamila (LAGOS)
17 Years+ Counting in the House of Representatives
Honourable Olufemi Gbajabiamila simply referred by his peers and colleagues as 'Femi' was first elected to represent the Surulere 1 Federal Constituency of Lagos State in 2003 on the platform of Alliance for Democracy (AD). His brilliant performance in this representation prompted his constituents to continuously renew his tenure in subsequent elections, giving him the mandate to serve them.
After having won re-election under the Action Congress (AC) Party in 2007, Femi became a known voice in the Green Chambers; in that same year, he headed a group of lawmakers who were opposed to the 'Third Term Agenda' of the then President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
He was also known to be the highest sponsor of Bills and Motions in the House of Representatives during the 6th Assembly (2007-2011).
Hon. Gbajabiamila won his 2011 re-election under the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Party - a Party that had metamorphosed from AD to AC and then, ACN; then in 2015 and 2019, under the auspices of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Party.
He was also well known for his rejection of the National Honour of the Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR) stating that he believed he does not not deserve it and that the Honourary Awards system in Nigeria has been abused. He was the Minority Leader in the 6th (2007-2011) and 7th (2011-2015) Assemblies. He later became the House Leader in the 8th Assembly (2015-2019).
He is the current Speaker of the House of Representatives (9th Assembly: 2019-2023)
Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has completed 4 consecutive terms representing Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and is currently in his 5th term as a Federal Lawmaker.
He is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC)
Number 9 - Honourable Umar Barde Yakubu (KADUNA)
17 Years+ Counting in the House of Representatives
Hon. Yakubu has had a formidable hold in the representative ability to lead the people of Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
He holds a Masters Degree in Agricultural Economics.
He has served in different committees of the House of Representatives and, has tremendously empowered and attracted the dividends of democracy to his Constituency.
Hon. Umar Barde is the current Minority Whip of the 9th Assembly (2019-2023).
He has completed 4 consecutive terms and is in his 5th term as a member of the House of Representatives representing Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State.
He is a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP)
